Malayalam is a Dravidian language predominantly spoken in the Indian state of Kerala, with official language status also recognized in Lakshadweep and Puducherry. Classed as one of India’s scheduled languages, it was designated a Classical Language in 2013. Approximately 38 million people speak Malayalam, which is also prevalent in neighboring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, particularly in regions such as Nilgiris and Coimbatore.

Historical linguistics suggests that Malayalam evolved from Middle Tamil during the 6th century, although some theories propose an even earlier separation.
